The best bedroom temperature for sleep for most adults is roughly 65–68°F (18–20°C) — cooler than the daytime temperature most of us keep our homes at. The reason isn’t comfort preference; it’s biology. Your body has to shed a small amount of heat to fall and stay asleep, and a slightly cool room helps it do that. This matters for everyone, but it matters more for two groups whose internal thermostats are already running differently: women in perimenopause, and new parents managing both their own sleep and a baby’s. Let’s walk through what the research actually says.

Why does a cool room help you sleep?

Your core body temperature isn’t constant. It follows a daily rhythm, drifting down in the evening and reaching its lowest point in the early hours of the morning before climbing again toward wake time. This evening drop isn’t a side effect of getting sleepy — it’s one of the triggers of sleepiness. As bedtime approaches, your body widens the blood vessels in your hands and feet, pushing warmth out to the skin so heat can radiate away and your core can cool.

A 2012 review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology by Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno (Okamoto-Mizuno & Mizuno, 2012, J. Physiol. Anthropol.) concluded that the thermal environment is “one of the most important factors” affecting human sleep. In real-life conditions — where we sleep with bedding and clothing — heat exposure reliably increases wakefulness and reduces both slow-wave (deep) sleep and REM sleep. A room that’s too warm physically interferes with the deep, restorative stages your body is trying to reach.

What is the ideal bedroom temperature, exactly?

Most sleep researchers and clinicians land on a range of about 60–67°F (15.5–19.5°C), with many pointing to roughly 65°F (18.3°C) as a sweet spot for the average adult. The exact number that feels right varies from person to person, and that’s fine — the range is a starting point, not a rule to feel anxious about.

A few practical notes from the research:

  • Too warm is worse than slightly too cool. Temperatures climbing toward 79–80°F and above tend to fragment sleep significantly for most people. A blanket fixes “slightly too cold” in seconds; nothing in bed fixes “too hot” except cooling the room.
  • Older adults often do better at the warmer end of the range. Age-related changes in how the body produces and sheds heat mean some people sleep best a few degrees higher.
  • It’s about the temperature your body experiences, not just the thermostat. Bedding, pajamas, and a partner’s body heat all count. Two people can need very different thermostat settings to reach the same skin temperature.

Why does temperature matter more in perimenopause?

If you’re in perimenopause or menopause and you’ve noticed your old bedroom setup suddenly doesn’t work, you’re not imagining it. Your thermostat genuinely changed.

Hot flashes and night sweats are, at their core, a thermoregulation event. Researchers describe them as the body’s heat-loss mechanisms — sweating, flushing, blood vessel dilation — firing in the presence of an essentially normal core temperature. The leading explanation is that fluctuating estrogen narrows what’s called the “thermoneutral zone”: the comfortable band of core temperature within which your body stays calm. When that zone shrinks, a tiny rise in core temperature that you’d never have noticed before is suddenly enough to trip the alarm and trigger a flash.

A classic study by Woodward and Freedman, published in Sleep in 1994 (Woodward & Freedman, 1994, Sleep, 17(6):497–501), recorded hot flashes alongside all-night sleep in postmenopausal women and confirmed the tight link between these thermoregulatory events and disrupted sleep architecture. The practical takeaway: when your thermoneutral zone is narrow, the room temperature has less margin for error. What helps:

  • Aim for the cooler end of the range (around 64–66°F / 18°C) if night sweats are frequent.
  • Use breathable, moisture-wicking bedding and sleepwear so sweat evaporates instead of pooling.
  • Layer bedding so you can shed a blanket mid-night without fully waking.

How does this work for new parents and babies?

New parents face a double temperature problem: their own overheated, fragmented nights, and the genuine worry of getting their baby’s sleep environment right.

For the baby, the guidance is reassuringly simple. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2022 safe-sleep recommendations (AAP, 2022, Pediatrics, 150(1)) advise against overheating and head coverings, and suggest dressing an infant in no more than one layer more than an adult would wear to be comfortable in the same room. The AAP deliberately avoids naming a strict temperature, but a room kept comfortable for a lightly dressed adult — broadly the same 65–69°F range — is the usual target. Signs a baby is too warm include sweating, flushed skin, or a chest or back-of-neck that feels hot to the touch. Notably, you do not need to crank the heat for a baby; overheating carries real risk, and “comfortable for you” is the right reference point.

For the parent, the irony is that the same cool room that helps the baby helps you too — if you can get back to sleep at all between wake-ups. When sleep is already broken into fragments, every avoidable disruption matters more, because you have fewer uninterrupted stretches to begin with. What else in the bedroom affects sleep besides temperature?

Temperature is the biggest environmental lever, but it works alongside a few others:

  • Airflow. A slightly cool room with gentle air movement helps sweat evaporate — particularly useful for night sweats.
