Your chronotype is your body’s natural preference for when to sleep and when to be awake — and it’s largely inherited, not a habit you picked up. Genome-wide studies have linked hundreds of genetic variants to whether someone is a “morning lark” or a “night owl,” and chronotype shifts predictably across the lifespan: it runs latest in the late teens and early twenties, then drifts steadily earlier through adulthood. Most people sit somewhere in the middle, not at either extreme.
That matters more than it sounds. When your schedule doesn’t match your internal clock, you’re not sleeping badly because you’re doing something wrong — you’re sleeping at the wrong time for your particular body. And for two groups in particular, new parents and women in perimenopause, that mismatch tends to arrive without warning.
What is a chronotype, exactly?
A chronotype is the timing of your internal circadian clock relative to the outside world. The most-used research measure, the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire, defines it simply: the midpoint of your sleep on free days, when nothing is forcing you awake. If you sleep from midnight to 8am on a Saturday, your mid-sleep is 4am. Earlier midpoints mean an earlier chronotype; later midpoints mean a later one.
The older Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire, developed by Horne and Östberg and published in the International Journal of Chronobiology in 1976, asks about preferences instead — when you’d choose to exercise, take a test, or wake without an alarm. Both approaches capture the same underlying thing: the phase of your circadian system, which also governs the timing of your melatonin release, your core body temperature low point, and your cortisol rise in the morning. Crucially, chronotype is a distribution, not two boxes. Roenneberg and colleagues, analysing tens of thousands of questionnaire responses in Current Biology in 2004, found chronotype forms a broad bell curve. True extreme larks and true extreme owls exist, but most people land in the wide middle — which is why “I’m just not a morning person” is often a smaller difference than it feels.
Is being a night owl genetic or just a habit?
Substantially genetic. The largest study to date, by Jones and colleagues in Nature Communications in 2019, analysed data from 697,828 people and identified 351 genetic loci associated with morningness. The genes involved include core circadian clock components — variants near PER2, RGS16, and others — meaning the difference is written into the machinery that keeps circadian time, not just into your bedtime habits.
That said, genetics sets a tendency, not a sentence. Light exposure is the strongest environmental input to the clock. Roenneberg’s team demonstrated in Current Biology in 2007 that chronotype tracks with the amount of natural daylight people get, and that people living toward the western edge of a time zone — where the sun rises later — tend to have later chronotypes than those at the eastern edge, despite sharing a clock time. The practical upshot: you probably can’t turn an owl into a lark, but a meaningful shift of an hour or so is realistic. What is social jetlag, and why does it make you feel awful?
Social jetlag is the gap between the sleep your body wants and the sleep your schedule allows. Wittmann, Dinich, Merrow and Roenneberg introduced the term in Chronobiology International in 2006, defining it as the difference between your mid-sleep on work days and your mid-sleep on free days. If you wake at 6:30 on weekdays but drift to a 9am wake-up on Sundays, you’re effectively flying across time zones every weekend.
Their work, and Roenneberg’s later 2019 review in Biology, found social jetlag is common — a large share of adults carry an hour or more — and that later chronotypes carry the most of it, simply because standard work and school hours are built for earlier types. Higher social jetlag has been associated in observational studies with more daytime sleepiness, lower mood, and less favourable metabolic markers.
The important nuance: social jetlag is a timing mismatch, not a duration problem. You can get eight hours a night and still feel wrecked if those eight hours keep moving. How does chronotype change with age?
It moves earlier — and the shift is one of the more reliable findings in the field.
Roenneberg and colleagues, in Current Biology in 2004, mapped chronotype across more than 25,000 people and found it grows later through adolescence, peaks in lateness around age 20, and then advances steadily earlier for the rest of adult life. Fischer and colleagues confirmed the same pattern in a US sample in PLOS ONE in 2017. Alongside this, laboratory work by Duffy and colleagues has shown that older adults tend to wake at an earlier point relative to their internal temperature and melatonin rhythms, not just at an earlier clock time.

What does chronotype mean for new parents?
For the first year or so, chronotype is largely overridden — and that’s the hard part. A newborn’s sleep is driven by feeding, not by a mature circadian clock, so a parent’s sleep timing is dictated externally regardless of whether they’re a lark or an owl.
Montgomery-Downs and colleagues, publishing normative postpartum sleep data in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2010, found new mothers’ total sleep time was reasonably close to typical, but sleep was heavily fragmented and its timing scattered across the 24-hour day. Insana and Montgomery-Downs, in Developmental Psychobiology in 2013, documented similar fragmentation in both mothers and fathers in the early postpartum months.
Two things follow. First, if you’re a night owl, evening is your natural alert window — so the classic advice to “sleep when the baby sleeps” at 8pm may simply not work for your physiology, and failing at it isn’t a failure of discipline. What does chronotype mean in perimenopause?
Two changes land at once, which is why this period can feel disorienting.
The first is the age-related advance described above: your clock is already drifting earlier through your 40s. The second is hormonal. Baker, reviewing sleep across the menopausal transition in Nature and Science of Sleep in 2018, describes rising rates of insomnia complaints and fragmented sleep, with night-time vasomotor symptoms — hot flashes and night sweats — a significant contributor to awakenings.
Layered together, the common experience is falling asleep earlier than you’d like, then waking at 4:30 or 5am fully alert with hours before the day starts. That early waking often reads as insomnia, when part of it is a phase advance meeting a lighter sleep architecture. It’s a different problem with a different response — waking up too early, perimenopause and sleep, and night sweats and sleep each cover a piece of it.
How do I work with my chronotype instead of against it?
A few things the evidence supports, all low-stakes:
Find your actual chronotype before adjusting anything. Note your natural sleep midpoint on days with no alarm and no obligations — a holiday week is ideal. That number, not how you feel at 7am on a Tuesday, is the honest starting point.
Anchor your wake time, not your bedtime. Wake time plus morning light is what moves the clock; bedtime largely follows. Facer-Childs’ protocol worked in this direction.

Shrink social jetlag rather than eliminating it. Cutting a two-hour weekend drift to under an hour is realistic. Demanding an identical wake time seven days a week rarely survives real life.
